- The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) reported that spending on addiction and mental health rose from 6.8 percent of total health care costs in 2013 to 8.2 percent in 2020. Employers and workers spent about $77 billion on mental health and substance use disorders (SUD) in 2020. People 25 and younger – who comprise 36 percent of the population – accounted for 42 percent of spending on mental health and SUD and 20 percent of overall health care spending for 2020. Spending on mental health and SUD for children 18 and younger increased from 12 percent in 2013 to 18 percent in 2020. (Report here)
