A new report found that 230,609 health care providers left the workforce in 2021 due to retirement, burnout, and pandemic-related stressors. Physicians experienced the largest loss, with 117,000 professionals leaving the workforce. Over 53,000 nurse practitioners left, followed by 22,704 physician assistants, 22,032 physical therapists, and 15,500 licensed clinical social workers. Among physician specialties, the biggest declines were seen within internal medicine, family practice, and emergency medicine fields. The five states with hospitals experiencing the most critical staffing shortages are: Georgia (20.26 percent), South Carolina (28.99 percent), Vermont (20.00 percent), Delaware (20.00 percent), and Michigan (19.46 percent).
