  • A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analysis found that superbug infections and deaths in U.S. hospitals jumped approximately 15 percent in 2020. From 2012 to 2017, a public health push to stamp out superbug infections in hospitals resulted in a 30 percent decline. The 2020 surge was fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic that reversed years of progress in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said the pandemic pushed health systems “near their breaking points,” with hospitals overwhelmed by sicker patients and an overreliance on antibiotic prescriptions, which put patients at risk of developing a resistance to drugs.
