- A recent report from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacist found that drug spend in the U.S. increased 7.7 percent in 2021. The increase was driven by utilization (a 4.8 percent increase), price (a 1.9 percent increase), and new drugs (a 1.1 percent). Nonfederal hospitals made up about $39.6 billion of that total, representing an 8.4 percent increase over the prior year. Clinics comprised $105 million of last year’s drug spending, a 7.7 percent increase over 2020. The researchers predict drug spending will increase somewhere between 4 percent and 6 percent this year.
