- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a record of 2.5 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States as rates worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a 32 percent increase in cases of syphilis in 2021 to more than 176,000. White House officials are concerned that a ruling from a federal judge in Texas that blocks an Affordable Care Act requirement for some health plans to offer certain preventive services at no cost for patients, including STD screenings, could lead to further increases in cases.
