- The seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases was more than 300 percent higher than Labor Day of last year. The jump in cases has translated into overcrowded hospitals and a rise in infections among children. Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN that children can be protected from COVID-19 by “surrounding them with vaccinated people.” Alabama and Mississippi – both of which have less than 40 percent of their populations vaccinated – are also contending with their more than 90 percent ICU utilization.
