- Walmart announced it is launching its Walmart Healthcare Research Institute in an effort to improve clinical trial diversity. The retailer will leverage its reach to help drug researchers connect to older adults, rural residents, women, and minority populations. Walmart’s chief medical officer John Wigneswaran said they plan to start with trials of drugs that most impact underrepresented communities, such as treatments for diabetes and asthma, but are also considering areas of research like HIV and dementia. The move comes just a few months after Walgreens announced a similar move to address trial diversity. (Press release here; Articles here and here)
