- According to a new study published in JAMA, alcohol-related deaths reached record levels during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of deaths involving alcohol increased from 78, 927 in 2019 to 99,017 in 2020. Young adults ages 25 to 44 experienced the greatest increases in 2020, with alcohol-related deaths rising nearly 40 percent over the previous year. The number of deaths from opioids in which alcohol played a role increased from 8,503 in 2019 to 11,969 in 2020, representing a 40.8 percent increase. (Study here)
