- A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that addressing social needs like housing, food security, and transportation could reduce hospital inpatient admission rates by 11 percent and emergency department visits by 4 percent. The intervention programs saved $3.4 million, or 17 percent of yearly program expenses, in hospitalization costs. However, the researchers found the savings may not cover full program costs and that more work is needed to identify ways to increase patient uptake and define characteristics of successful programs.
