- Premier Inc. released a three-part series examining the impact of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in the United States. The first blog found that treating OUD is costing hospitals more than $95 billion a year – just under 8 percent of all hospital expenditures. According to the analysis, 87 percent of people with OUD do not receive evidence-based treatment and patients with an OUD diagnosis average 32.5 percent higher cost per emergency department visit. While Medicaid and private insurance cover the majority of non-elderly adults who are treated for OUD, health systems still cover the cost of treating the uninsured and homeless. The second blog reveals that the prevalence of OUD is not evenly distributed across states, with 14 states and D.C. providing emergency care for a larger percentage of patients with OUD than the national average provides. The third blog examines health disparities associated with OUD. (Hospital blog here; state blog here; health disparities blog here)
