  • Almost a quarter of U.S. hospitals are reporting “critical staffing shortages” as counties across the country set COVID-19 case records. According to HHS data, approximately 24 percent of nearly 5,000 hospitals are experiencing the shortages — the most since the start of the pandemic — and another 100 anticipate shortages this week. Meanwhile, across the country hospitals are asking vaccinated health workers who are infected with COVID-19 to come back to work. Hospital executives and health officials say they are following the CDC’s new advice, which allows facilities to bring back workers after five days of isolation without a negative COVID-19 test.
