- A new study published in Health Affairs found that per-person health care spending between 2015-2019 ranged from $7,250 to $14,500 across the U.S. The authors said that the variation is due to state-specific factors, such as demographics and the underlying health of the population, the share of population enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid, and the health care provider supply. Personal income had the largest impact on spending variation, emphasizing the “known association between wealth and access to health care services throughout the U.S.” There were also strong associations between estimated spending and behavioral risk factors, highlighting that disease prevention and healthier living could drive down health spending.
