  • Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released guidance detailing how long hours, lack of autonomy, low pay, and other elements of a toxic workplace can impact the health and organizational performance of workers. The guidance supports the Surgeon General’s Advisory on Addressing Health Worker Burnout, issued in May, stating that chronic stress from work can lead to the disruption of sleep and increased susceptibility to infection. Earlier this month, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) released its National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being, calling for industry leaders and government agencies to work together to reduce administrative burdens and the strain health care workers face on the job.
