  • The FDA released new sodium targets in an effort to reduce Americans’ overall sodium intake by 12 percent over the next two-and-a-half years. The targets seek to decrease average sodium intake from approximately 3,400 milligrams (mg) to 3,000 mg per day, which is still well above the Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ recommended limit of 2,300 mg per day for those 14 and old. The recommendation, announced Wednesday, is expected to cover a wide variety of processed, packaged, and prepared foods — from chain restaurant meals to processed food on grocery store shelves and even baby food.
