- Senators announced a new $3 billion bipartisan deal that increase the number of students who could qualify for free school lunch based on income. Universal free lunch was instituted at the start of the pandemic to ensure children wouldn’t go hungry through the crisis. The Keep Kids Fed Act would fully extend all waivers through the summer to allow meal deliveries and grab-and-go options for students. It would also extend supply chain flexibilities and higher reimbursement rates through the 2022-2023 school year. However, families would need to once again apply to qualify. Congress must pass the legislation by June 30, when current meal waivers are set to expire. (Articles here and here)
