- Mental health advocates are cautioning that expanding access to mental health treatment won’t have a significant impact on gun violence. The experts note that most people with mental illness never become violent – approximately 4 percent of community violence can be attributed to people with serious mental illness, and when they do become violent, poverty, substance use, or other factors are usually at play.
