- The CDC reported that overdose deaths hit a record high last year as the COVID-19 pandemic upended society and daily lives. According to the agency, 104,288 people died from an overdose in the 12-month period that ended in September 2021, marking an increase of nearly 16 percent and roughly 14,000 more deaths than the previous year.
