- The White House is planning to nominate Boston cancer surgeon Monica Bertagnolli to run the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The decision would end a lengthy vacancy atop the health research agency and vault Bertagnolli into the role just months after being appointed as director of the government’s National Cancer Institute. As Chief, Bertagnolli would be thrust into the center of a prolonged fight over the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. House Republicans have prioritized investigating the NIH’s funding of research projects in search of evidence that some of its grants may have inadvertently triggered Covid’s spread.
