- Johns Hopkins University’s medical school is set to become tuition-free for the majority of students starting this fall, thanks to a landmark $1 billion donation from billionaire Mike Bloomberg. This unprecedented gift aims to alleviate financial burdens on medical students, covering tuition costs entirely for those from families earning less than $300,000 annually. Additionally, it will support living expenses and other fees for students from families earning up to $175,000. Currently, a significant portion of Johns Hopkins’ medical students rely on financial aid, facing an average debt of approximately $104,000 upon graduation. Bloomberg’s donation extends beyond the medical school to enhance financial aid at other graduate programs within the university, emphasizing the need to address disparities in health care access and workforce shortages in crucial medical fields.
