- Medical schools across the country are actively seeking to increase representation of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students, who are significantly underrepresented in medicine. Research indicates that patients of color often prefer physicians of their own race, and studies suggest better health outcomes for Black patients treated by Black doctors. However, efforts to diversify the medical field face opposition, primarily from initiatives aiming to restrict or ban diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in higher education. These legislative moves threaten to worsen existing health disparities experienced by people of color, potentially impacting health care sectors from Medicare policies to medical school admissions practices.
