- The World Health Organization (WHO) says that nearly 10,000 people died from COVID-19 in the month of December, and hospital admissions jumped 42 percent in Europe and the Americas. The increased transmission was fueled by holiday gatherings and a new variant. While the December mortality rate is much less than the peak of the pandemic, the WHO director-general said that it was a level of preventable deaths that is not acceptable. (Articles here and here)
