- A New York Times (NYT) investigation found that many of the country’s largest nonprofit hospital systems have drifted far from their charitable roots. According to the NYT analysis, more than half of all hospitals in the U.S. are set up as nonprofit, a designation that allows the hospitals tax breaks in exchange for providing a benefit to their communities. However, most of the nonprofit hospitals operate like for-profit companies – focusing on expansions into affluent suburbs and trying to meet revenue targets by slashing staff levels and squeezing payments from poor patients who are eligible for free care.
