- The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) released an updated report on its previous 12 hospital compliance audits. The OIG identified 387 improperly paid Medicare claims totaling $82 million in overpayments, 333 of which were related to inpatient services and 54 were related outpatient claims. OIG recommended to CMS that the 12 hospitals repay the funds, and that the agency uses OIG’s provider-specific audit reports to improve Medicare program oversight. However, since the last audit, CMS has not provided the OIG with sufficient information to determine if CMS had taken any action or if the agency had fully recouped Medicare overpayments.
