- A collection of nearly 30 provider groups wants the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to explore a hybrid payment method for primary care physicians participating in value-based care. In a letter, the groups ask the Biden administration to combine fee-for-service and prospective payments to primary care doctors to bolster the workforce. The request comes as CMS has tried in recent months to get more rural and primary care providers invested in value-based care, including offering upfront investments to new entrants in models. Hybrid payments have been explored over the past decade through various models, most notably the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus program launched in 2017. One of the tracks in the model enables a physician to get normal fee-for-service payments alongside performance-based payments. (Article here)
