- The CDC announced Friday it created new metrics for determining when people should use masks and take other COVID-19 precautions. The new benchmarks tie masking recommendations to a combination of a community’s level of cases, hospitalizations, and hospital capacity instead of using case counts alone. Under the new guidance, nearly 70 percent of the U.S. population lives in an area considered to be low or medium risk, meaning residents can go indoors without masks.
