- The World Health Organization (WHO) renamed the two branches of the monkeypox virus. The Central African or Congo Basin clade will now be known as Clade I and the West African clade will be called Clade II. The WHO is also in the process of renaming the disease by inviting proposals for new names, while the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses is mulling a name change for the virus itself.
