- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data on Friday showing that COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2021. According to the data there were 415,000 COVID-19 deaths last year. COVID-19 was also the third-leading cause of death in 2020, but the number of deaths from the virus actually increased in 2021, with 60,000 more deaths than 2020.
