- The Supreme Court said Friday that it will temporarily keep in place federal rules for use of an abortion drug while it takes time to consider the issues raised in a court challenge. In an order signed by Justice Samuel Alito, the court asked both sides to weigh in by Tuesday over whether lower court rulings restricting the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug, mifepristone, should be allowed to take effect while the case works its way through federal courts. The order suggests the court will decide that issue by late Wednesday. (Articles here and here)
- Medication abortions provided by virtual-only providers accounted for an increasing share of total abortions in the United States since the Supreme Court eliminated the constitutional right to abortion in June 2022, according to a new report by the Society of Family Planning, a nonprofit focused on abortion and contraception. While total abortions decreased by 2 percent from April to December 2022, medicated abortions via telehealth increased by 136 percent. In April, there were less than 4,000 medicated abortions provided virtually, and in December, there were more than 8,500. (Article here)
