- The White House will release a plan today calling on the DOJ, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Indian Health Service to expand the use of medicines such as buprenorphine and methadone in pregnant women. Under the blueprint, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) officials would train judges to incorporate the use of Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD) for pregnant women with substance use disorders. However, experts are worried that the plan is vague on the specifics and lacks the funding needed to urge agencies and health institutions to move faster. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioid use disorder among pregnant women has more than quadrupled in recent years. (Article here)
