- A new study published in the American Journal of Managed Care suggests that Medicare needs to make more home care services reimbursable for accountable care organizations (ACOs) to entice more providers to offer such care. Researchers found that roughly 25 percent of the 151 ACOs surveyed had a formal home-based care program, while another 25 percent offered occasional visits and 17 percent had programs in development. Of the 40 ACOs that had home-based care, 37 percent were based on primary care and 24 percent were based on care coordination. Only 13 percent offered programs based on social needs. “A majority of respondents expressed interest in expanding services but were concerned about their ability to demonstrate a return on investment,” the study said.
