- A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expert panel voted unanimously on a proposal to simplify the nation’s strategy for vaccinating people against COVID-19. Currently, unvaccinated individuals still receive monovalent vaccines based on the original COVID-19 strain as the primary series. They must then receive bivalent shots as boosters. The panel voted to update all vaccines to contain the same ingredients as the two-strain shots, meaning all vaccines – first dose and boosters – would all have the same formulation targeting the same viral strain or strains, regardless of the manufacturer.
