- When Black patients see Black doctors, they are more likely to get preventative care, according to the National Institutes of Health. Sixty percent of African Americans have cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association, but fewer than 3 percent of cardiologists are Black, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. More diversity among cardiologists would save lives, said Dr. Michelle Albert, the president of the American Heart Association and the only Black cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
