- The Brookings Institution released a brief estimating that as many as 4.1 million people may remain out of work due to long COVID symptoms. The estimate is more than twice the think tank’s previous estimate of 1.6 million, released in January 2022. According to the brief, approximately 8 percent of working-age Americans (16.3 million people) reported they have long COVID. Between 1.8 million and 4.1 million can’t work because of it, representing an annual cost of $170 billion in lost wages. The brief’s author notes that the economic burden will continue to rise if long COVID patients don’t begin recovering at greater rates. (Brief here)
