- The number of people who died by suicide in the U.S. hit an all-time high last year. According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022. The number of suicide deaths was on a downward trend in 2019 and 2020, but it increased by 5 percent in 2021 and then further increased by 2.6 percent in 2022 to 49,449, the CDC found. Experts caution that suicide is complicated and that recent increases might be driven by various factors, including higher rates of depression and limited availability of mental health services.
